What we've been up to ...
This term, we’re going “UNDER THE SEA” at Liverpool Public and Marsden Road Public Schools.
WANDERING BOOKS is a creative program offered in public schools in South Western Sydney. Currently, we offer WANDERING BOOKS to schools in Liverpool. It is a collaboration between the Think+DO Tank's LOST IN BOOKS multilingual kids' bookshop and the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre. To date, the program has been made possible with the support of the SSI Innovation Fund.
WANDERING BOOKS is now a proven model and it is available to new schools on a fee-for-service basis.
It makes two offers to schools and the families connected to them. Firstly, we provide a informal social "lounge" at school for all families; and secondly, we offer a free creative program for newly arrived families.
The social lounge is open for all parents and any younger siblings of school age children. It happens either just after school drop off, or before school ends for the day. We invite parents and younger kids to relax, read, play, socialise and grab a snack. There are staff on hand who can provide expert information and assistance. We offer books and newspapers in English and community languages, as well as space and time to read and relax.
WANDERING BOOKS' creative program offers a range of creative workshops for newly arrived parents/carers and their children throughout the school term. The workshops are an opportunity for you and your children to play in your first language and in English; and to bond through creative activities, such as textiles, puppetry, music and book illustration with leading artists. Refreshments are provided, and younger children are always welcome.
In Term 3, 2018, WANDERING BOOKS will be at:
Liverpool Public School on Monday afternoons from 2.30pm, and
Marsden Road Public School on Tuesday afternoons from 2.30pm.
It has also been offered with success at Liverpool West and Hoxton Park Public Schools.
